Addition Of Six New Staff In The Revamp Of Wolves Medical & Performance Department
Recently, WOLVES has announced a significant remodeling of its medical and performance department. They have hired six new staff members and have changed the responsibilities and roles of many existing staff members.
The former England national team doctor and UK Athletics chief medical officer, Dr. Rob Chakraverty, who arrived in May 2020, is promoted to head of the service. He will now have the new title of performance and medicine manager.
Tom Farrow, who has been the Strength and Conditioning Coach of the England and Team GB Rugby 7s team, has now become the Head of Sport Science. Whereas Ben Macdonald, who has been the Lead Physio for British Cycling for the three-and-a-half years, is now appointed Head Physio.
Dr. Kai Win will become the first-team doctor, and the last team, Dr. Matt Perry, will move to the new role of Head of Medical Services. Dr. Kate Ludlam will be appointed the first-team performance psychologist, and Melissa Forde has been appointed Head Chef. In addition, Michelle Rich has been appointed as a nurse.
It is reported that the changes have been made to have a united medical and performance department. They desire that the department remain “robust” and “flourish” even when the Head Coach changes. On the club’s official website, Dr. Chakraverty said that while examining the structure, they felt that the identity of Wolves’ performance department and medical department depended a lot on the current coach. He further stated that “The last head coach brought in his staff and his ways of working, which transformed the club, but they left, and Wolves had to rethink to move the club forward.”
Jeff, the executive chairman, and Scott, the technical director, want that even if the new head coach brings in the necessary staff, the identity of Wolves should flourish independently of it. They want the identity of the wolves to be strong and the infrastructure, working methods, and processes to not depend on the coach or its staff. They want to support the coaching team as well as create something that will offer consistency and longevity. To achieve it, they made a plan and hired a staff that would make it possible.
Dr. Chakraverty further stated that he wanted to recruit outside of football and inside for the new roles. He added that to create the support team they need, they require people who have a lot of football experience and those with other elite sports experience. He believes that this diversity will provide new ideas that can verify and challenge the status quo. He further stated:
“Unless you’ve lived outside of football, these questions are often not asked, and other ways are not considered. We’re trying to create freshness, bring in people with bright minds, open minds who may well have strong ideas but have the humility to hold them loose, which means they don’t have to. hold on to these ideas no matter what situation we find ourselves in.”
While recruiting, they assured that everyone upheld the five Wolves values - progressive, bright, humble, unity, and determination. Chakraverty also explained the reasons behind the new role of chief medical officer for Perry, the former club’s doctor. He said: “Matt can make sure the backbone of the club is taken care of,” he said. “It’s a very strategic direction for us, ‘these are his strengths – he’s the wolves, he’s the story,’ and without him, we couldn’t do this job.
Dr. Chakraverty said that although it is unusual to have a full-time nurse on a club’s first team, Rich’s appointment was significant. So when he was asked about the first staff member needed, without a doubt, he said it was a nurse. He explained the need for a nurse and stated that they needed, “Someone who could help with a lot of the heavy responsibilities of handling Covid issues at the club because it turned out to be such pressure for a lot of other Wolves staff last year, as it was for all other clubs and even the country.”
According to Chakraverty, as they are entering the second season and Covid remains an essential factor, the nurse’s role remains critical. The nurse will be looking at all aspects of protecting the health of all of the players across the club.
It was reported wolves had 99% player uptime in 2018/19. It was in the last season they had more injury issues.
Dr. Chakraverty further said, “When it comes to minimizing the impact of injuries on the progress of clubs, it is always a question of excellent communication between the doctor, the physio, the science and the coach, with the central player.”
According to him, Injuries are a part of all sports, and it is a joint responsibility. He believes that as everybody takes responsibility for success, they must also take responsibility for failure. He said there is always something to learn from it.
